2019 BMW M2 Competition
Although the figure is slightly down on the M3/M4's 317kW output, the broad spread of power and torque should transform the little M2 into a real beast.
The inline-6 is a version of the engine from the M3 and M4. This enables a sharper 0-62mph time of 4.2sec in combination with an optional seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The steering wheel also finally receives M1 and M2 buttons for drivers to save their preferred settings for the powertrain, steering and stability control, while the seat belts feature M colour stitching.
Driving modes include "Comfort", "Sport" and 'Sports+', and a stability control toggle switch is also equipped. "It is still the benchmark in its class in terms of response and reactions, but it now slides with greater progressiveness and enthusiasm".
That's still 3.0-liters, like the old vehicle, but it now pushes out 410 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. It also means the M2 Competition has 44bhp and 95lb ft more than the turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder Cayman GTS. Despite the added bulk, its power-to-weight ratio has risen by 17bhp per tonne over its predecessor to 261bhp per tonne. That's enough to launch the auto from 0-60 miles per hour in 4.0 seconds with the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) or 4.2 seconds with the 6-speed manual, BMW says.
They retain the same ratios as before and operate in combination with an electronic limited-slip Active M Differential, which provides a locking effect to the rear wheels of between 0% and 100% depending on the prevailing traction, yaw rate and steering angle, among other factors.
At the back, there's a new dual-exhaust system, with two electrically-controlled flaps that can be used to adjust the soundtrack.
FOLLOWING an unofficial early glimpse at a new more potent addition to the M2 line-up, BMW has confirmed its acclaimed baby of the M range will be joined by an even more powerful version dubbed the M2 Competition that gains an extra turbo and makes 302kW.

Further changes include an optional brake package.
To compensate for the added power, the M2 Competition gets 400mm front discs with six-piston callipers and 380mm rear discs with four-piston stoppers. "However, the DSC can still be relied upon in critical situations", he said.
There's more to the revised engine than an extra turbo.
You'll be able to distinguish the Competition from more "mundane" M2 and M2 Pure variants by its fresh front skirt, black grille and dark exhaust, along with those forged alloy wheels.
As hinted at by the leaked pics, this M2 Competition carries a few subtle cosmetic changes to mark it out from the standard vehicle too. Included as standard on United Kingdom models are new M Sport front seats, reconfigured M instruments, M seatbelts in various colours, the M Drive manager function from the M3 and M4, Park Distance Control and a red start/stop button.
BMW has not announced the pricing for the 2019 BMW M2 Competition, but it will arrive this summer. Both cars can be ordered from mid-May, but customer deliveries aren't expected until August.
