Mrs May was meeting on Tuesday with Caribbean leaders in the margins of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm) in London in an attempt to reassure them that anyone entitled to be in the United Kingdom would not be deported.
Home Office officials are searching their records to establish if any members of the so-called "Windrush generation" of Britons have been wrongly deported, Cabinet Office minister David Lidington has said.
The Home Secretary announced the creation of a new taskforce in the Home Office to speed up the regularisation of the immigration status of people who arrived in the United Kingdom as long ago as the 1940s.
'Can she tell the house how many have been detained as prisoners in their own country, can she tell the hse how many have been denied health under the NHS, how many denied pensions, how many have lost their jobs. "That's an error I want to put right", she said.
"Theresa May must apologise for this mess which has taken place as a direct outcome of the hostile environment she created".
But when pressed for answers by MPs, Rudd said she was "not aware of any person being removed in these circumstances", telling politicians to report any cases they know of to the Home Office.
"As my right honourable friend the prime minister has already made clear, there is absolutely no question about their right to remain and I am very sorry for any confusion or anxiety felt", said Britain Interior Miniser, Amber Rudd.
The British government has expressed regret over treatment meted out on British residents who arrived from the Caribbean decades ago and are now being denied basic rights.
Under the 1971 Immigration Act, all Commonwealth citizens already living in the United Kingdom were given indefinite leave to remain - but the right to free movement between Commonwealth nations was ended from that date onwards.

"We would also like to reassure you that there will be no removals or detention as part of any assistance to help these citizens get their proper documentation in place", wrote Caroline Nokes, the immigration minister, to Caribbean foreign ministers and ambassadors.
She told BBC2's Daily Politics: "We're saying work with us, help us build up a picture of your life in the United Kingdom and we will do our bit, working with HMRC [HM Revenue and Customs], the DWP [Department for Work and Pensions], to establish those records which may not be available at first-hand to the individuals concerned".
Ahead of the 70th anniversary on 22 June, we would like to hear from those who were on board the Empire Windrush, their descendants, and people who have been inspired by the Windrush generation.
However, Rudd said "we don't know" the true number.
More than 140 lawmakers have signed a letter calling on Prime Minister, Theresa May to resolve an anomaly for those who immigrated as children between 1948 and 1971. "It is a stain on our nation's conscience and the prime minister must act urgently to right this historic wrong".
"After World War II we invited the Windrush generation over as citizens to help rebuild our country, and now their children are being treated like criminals".
The row comes as May meets Commonwealth leaders in London as they gather for their annual summit.
