Bryce Harper smacked a home run Monday despite breaking his bat in half in the process
Washington Nationals baseball star Bryce Harper is known for his big swings, but this week he hit a home run with a difference - smashing his bat in the process!
While the ball still flew an estimated 406 feet, the top of his bat crashed into the protective netting and Harper was left to run just holding his handle. According to MLB's website, the swing propelled the ball 406 feet, with an exit velocity of 99 miles per hour. In a startling display, the Washington Nationals slugger broke his bat completely in two pieces, yet still hit a long home run against the New York Mets. Ryan Madson got his second save. Callaway says Cespedes' timing at the plate is slightly off, and felt a break might help. Signed to a minor league contract late in spring training, he was added to the roster before the game. Cespedes flied out as a pinch hitter.
