The season is being split into two parts.
The season as a whole will consist of 16 episodes, but the first half will premiere on May 29 while the remaining half at some point later this year.
We certainly hope to get them before the year is up, however, because fans are going to be clamoring for more of the Bluths after this appetizer of eight episodes that will likely be devoured in less than three hours when it is released. This is a strategy Netflix has adopted for some of its shows recently, such as The Get Down, The Ranch and the final season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Why is Netflix only releasing half seasons of the two comedies instead of waiting for all the episodes to be available?

Apparently, the split is being done for the sake of awards consideration, with a release date prior to May 31 allowing the first episodes of the show to be considered for Emmy Award nominations.
Of course, it's worth noting that in olden times, back when Arrested Development was on Fox, we'd all have to wait weeks and weeks to take in an entire season of the show.
