General Motors shut down production of its full-size van in Wentzville Missouri due to the Meridian fire

Ford said Wednesday that it halted production of Super Duty trucks, which are F-250 through F-750 pickups, but the factories in OH and Kentucky continue churning out other models, including the Expedition and Lincoln Navigator full-size SUVs and the Econoline van.

A fire at a small auto parts-maker's plant is cutting off supply of key components and disrupting production of crucial Ford Motor Co. and Daimler AG models. Ford has been working with the die-cast parts manufacturer since the incident.

The F-150 is the top-selling model in the United States, and the Super Duty is one of the automaker's most profitable vehicles.

"The company has informed us that we have enough parts to build vehicles through Thursday".

The fire took place last week at a plant run by Meridian Lightweight Technologies. "We estimate it generates annual profits of at least $12-billion for the company, accounting for much more than the totality of Ford's global" profit. "Adjustments and changes are being made hour by hour as the company is engaged in getting the parts needed to maintain our normal production schedule".

Analysts and the company said F-150 inventory is fine for now, but the situation is volatile. "They can add production, add shifts", Krebs said.

Mercedes employs about 3,700 people who build about 286,000 vehicles annually at its Tuscaloosa, Alabama, plant, including the GLE and GLS SUVs and the C-Class sedan.

"Ford can make up the production", Krebs said.

Ford expects Super Duty production to continue at Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake, it said.

It will also be impacted at the Kansas City (Mo.) Assembly Plant and will also Ford F-Series Super Duty production is down at Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville.

"This is an extremely fluid situation", Kelli Felker, a Ford spokeswoman, said in an interview.

Stewart said Fiat Chrysler is doing an assessment of each shift based on the availability of parts.

According to the analyst, James Albertine, about 4,000 workers are employed at the Dearborn plant.

When Ford redesigned the F-150 a few years ago, it went all-in on using more exotic materials in an effort to lighten it up.

The fire, which was followed by a series of explosions, at Meridian Magnesium Products remains under investigation.

"The blaze at Meridian Magnesium, the city's largest employer, forced the evacuation of almost 150 people from the building, but one city official said it was "a miracle" that only two people were injured", the State Journal reported. Despite the damage at the 208,000-square-foot plant, which produces instrument panel components, some workers were told they could return to work that day, the paper reported last week. A cause is still unknown.
