Malaysia's shock election result leaves regional markets unmoved
Late last night, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong took to Facebook to extend warm wishes and congratulations to Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on being sworn in as the Prime Minister.
PM Lee said that he wished Dr Mahathir and his government all the best, and that he hopes to be able to catch up with Dr Mahathir in person, either in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, very soon. Two days after the elections and one day after the new government were officially sworn into office, Mohamad said that the country's king will legally pardon Ibrahim. "The United States-Malaysia relationship is rooted in longstanding and strong people-to-people ties, shared democratic values, and commercial relations. We can do much more together", he said on his Facebook account.
The Singapore government was "closely following" developments in Malaysia, Chan was quoted as saying by The Business Times (BT).
"Longer term, the outcome is positive as Malaysia starts off on a renewed slate, however getting the economy back on track is critical", Madeleine Kuang, a portfolio manager with Fidelity International, wrote in a note.

According to Thaksin, who was deposed by the Thai military in 2006 and now lives in exile, Mahathir's leadership would undoubtedly reinvigorate Asean as well as ideas and visions that he helped shape.
